چکیده

Selenium is an essential element for humans, animals and some species of microorganisms. In higher plants, however, the role of selenium is still unclear. Because selenium enrichment may influence the nutrient balance of plants, a study was done to test the effects of selenite-Se (Na2SeO3⋅5H2O) on selected macronutrients content in maize (Zea mays L. var. saccharata Kcke. cv. Z3ota Kar3owa) seedlings. Plants were grown in Hoagland I nutrient solution (pH 6,2) amended with selenite at 0 (control), 5, 25, 50 and 100 μmol⋅dm-3 for 14 days. The dry weight of the shoots was then analyzed for phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) content. Phosphorus and calcium content increased, while potassium content decreased with increasing selenium treatments. No significant differences were found for magnesium level. Plant growth was affected by excessive selenium concentration. At low concentration (5 μmol⋅dm-3), selenium tended to stimulate the plant growth and the root elongation but at higher concentrations (50 and 100 μmol⋅dm-3) the dry mass accumulation and root tolerance index severely decreased. The study revealed that disturbances of growth and reduction of plant’s biomass at the presence of high selenium concentrations in the nutrient solution may have resulted from the disturbance of mineral balance of plants, namely accumulation of large amounts of calcium and phosphorus in shoot tissues.

Effect of Selenite and Selenate Uptake by Maize Plants on Specific Leaf Area

Abstract—Specific leaf area (SLA; cmleaf gleaf) the ratio of leaf area to leaf dry mass is a key ecophysiological parameter influencing leaf physiology, photosynthesis, and whole plant carbon gain and also can be used as a rapid and diagnostic tool. In this study, two species of soluble inorganic selenium forms, selenite (Se) and selenate (Se) at different concentrations were investigated on ma...

Degree of salt tolerance in some newly developed maize (Zea mays L.) varieties. Maria Zahoor*, Rehana Khaliq, Zafar Ullah Zafar and Habib-ur-Rehman Athar

Salinity is a major abiotic-stress worldwide which decreases crop growth productivity. The objective of the present study was to investigate whether salt stress has adverse effects on growth, photosynthetic efficiency, biochemical properties and nutrient status of maize. An experiment was carried out with seeds of four varieties of maize which were allowed to germinate for one week. Afterwards,...

Role of Selenite and Selenate Uptake by Maize Plants in Chlorophyll A and B Content

Abstract—Extracting and determining chlorophyll pigments (chlorophyll a and b) in green leaves are the procedures based on the solvent extraction of pigments in samples using N,Ndimethylformamide as the extractant. In this study, two species of soluble inorganic selenium forms, selenite (Se) and selenate (Se) at different concentrations were investigated on maize plants that were growing in nut...

Effect of exogenous selenium supply on photosynthesis, Na+ accumulation and antioxidative capacity of maize (Zea mays L.) under salinity stress

The mechanism of selenium-mediated salt tolerance has not been fully clarified. This study investigated the possible role of selenium (Se) in regulating maize salt tolerance. A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the role of Se (0, 1, 5 and 25 μM Na2SeO3) in photosynthesis, antioxidative capacity and ion homeostasis in maize under salinity. The results showed that Se (1 μM) relieved the...
